The Ministry of Health has evaluated for the first time how well Corona vaccinations in Austria really protect against disease. The result.
How well do Corona vaccinations in Austria statistically protect against disease? This is precisely the question that the Ministry of Health has addressed by conducting a survey based on data from the Epidemiological Reporting System.
The survey identified so-called “vaccination breakthroughs”, which are Corona infections including symptoms such as fever, cough or loss of taste. The Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) has analyzed the figures along with vaccination data.
The results were presented Wednesday morning on Ö1-Frühjournal. According to the data, 2,690 people have contracted the coronavirus since the beginning of the year, despite the first partial vaccination. After the second vaccination, there were 1,560 people, the report continues. Specifically, from day 15 after the second dose are considered “vaccination breakthrough”.
In addition, according to Ö1, there are 96 “vaccination breakthroughs” after the single vaccination with Johnson & Johnson. Including these in the statistics, therefore, 1,656 people contracted corona despite a complete vaccination – and that is among 266,000 corona-infected people, or about 0.6 percent.
In its survey, AGES also calculated the effectiveness of the vaccination. According to Ö1, this is given as around 91 percent.
According to the Ministry of Health’s vaccination dashboard, 9,747,727 vaccine doses have been administered in Austria to date (as of August 2). 5,302,441 people – 67.11 percent of the vaccine-eligible population – have received at least one Corona vaccination, of which 4,644,762 people (58.78 percent) have full vaccine protection.
