According to Statistics Austria, Marie and Jakob topped the hit list of first names for newborns in 2020.
This is shown by an analysis of the first names (in original spelling, without special characters) of all 40,669 girls and 42,934 boys born that year. For girls, parents chose 734 times (1.8 percent) the name Marie, for boys 794 times (1.8 percent) the name Jakob, reported Statistics Austria in a release on Monday.

In 2019, Emma and Maximilian still won. “Marie is the top climber among the most popular baby names of 2020. Compared to the previous year, she has moved up three places and reached first place for the first time. With Jakob, a new name also lands on the top spot among boys.

Along with David and Leon, he was one of the top three climbers, each moving up two places from the previous year. Emma and Laura as well as Paul, on the other hand, each slipped three places,” said Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistik Austria.

Marie and Anna popular with girls
Marie entered the list of the ten most popular girls’ first names in 2009 at number 8 and became more popular year after year, reaching number 3 in both 2016 and 2017. Jakob landed at number 10 for the first time in 2010 and subsequently always ranked in the top 10 (except 2012: number 11) or number 3 in 2015, 2018 and 2019.

In the 2020 girls’ name hit list, Marie is followed in second place by Anna, which has been in the top 10 since 1991 and has achieved top 3 rankings since 1996, including 13 times in first place. Emilia came in third. In 4th place is Emma, which slipped three places compared to the previous year. As in 2019, Mia and Lena took fifth and sixth place.

Lea, another top climber, followed in 7th place (2019: 9th place). Eighth place went to Johanna, who is just as popular as in 2019. In 9th place is Sophia, the third top climber, who climbed two places compared to the previous year. Laura in 10th place slipped three places compared to 2019.

Jacob and David popular with boys
After Jakob, the hit list of boys’ names in 2020 is continued in second place by David, which thus moved up two places compared with the previous year. Maximilian, last year’s winner, follows in third place. Fourth place went to Felix, one place better than last year. In 5th place follows Paul, who slipped three places compared to the previous year.

Sixth, as in 2019, was Elias. In 7th place was Jonas, who moved up one place compared to the previous year. Leon, in 8th place, is the third top climber (10th in 2019). Lukas, which was the most popular boy’s name between 1996 and 2010, was only ninth in 2020. Rank 10 was occupied by Tobias, a re-entrant in the top 10 (2019: rank 11, before that consistently in the top 10 since 2000).

In the hit list of first names, the first first names in each case are ranked in original spelling without special characters. For the statistics of first names, on the other hand, names of the same origin are combined and the most frequent spelling of the etymologically combined first names is used in each case. This method results in a different ranking of the most popular first names than in the hit list: For girls, Anna is the most common first name in 2020, followed by Marie in second place and Sophie in third place. Among boys’ names, Lukas is in first place, followed by Elias in second place and Jakob in third place.
