In Germany, the number of new coronavirus infections has jumped within one day. Yesterday, the health authorities reported 8,324 new infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) – and thus over 4,400 more than the previous day. A week ago, the figure for Germany was 4,996 infections. More than 8,000 new infections within 24 hours were last registered in Germany on May 21.

The seven-day incidence has continued to rise, and is now just above the 40 mark – at 40.8. The previous day, the value was 37.4, and a week ago it was 25.1. The incidence has been the basis for many coronavirus restrictions in the pandemic so far, for example within the framework of the federal emergency brake, which expired at the end of June. In the future, other values such as hospital admissions will now be taken into account to a greater extent.

Nationwide, 22 deaths were recorded within 24 hours, according to the new data, up from 14 a week ago. A total of 91,921 people have now died in Germany from or involving a confirmed infection with Sars-CoV-2.

The RKI counted 3,835,375 confirmed infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the start of the pandemic, but the actual total is likely to be much higher because many infections go undetected. The RKI gave the number of those recovered as 3,687,600.
