122 people are in intensive care units across Austria, up from just 30 at this time a year ago.

The fourth wave is picking up steam much earlier than the second wave last fall, statistics show. Exactly one year ago, 181 new infections were reported within 24 hours; from Sunday to Monday, 1,120 new Corona infections were recorded. This may not yet be a cause for concern, but a glance at the number of occupied intensive care beds reveals that there are already about three times as many patients undergoing inpatient treatment throughout Austria as there were a year ago.

As of today, 122 patients are in intensive care units across Austria. More patients last required intensive care treatment at the beginning of June. On August 30, 2020, there had been only 30 intensive care patients.

Most of them are currently being treated in Vienna, namely 41. In the previous year, there were only 13. In Upper Austria (26) and Lower Austria (24), the number has also clearly increased compared to the previous year. In Lower Austria, there were only ten intensive care patients at this time in 2020, and only four in Upper Austria – in other words, about one fifth.
