At least 70 percent of people in the EU are fully vaccinated against the corona virus.
This was announced by EU Commission President von der Leyen.
This means that the EU has achieved an important goal.

The European Union has achieved an important goal in the fight against coronavirus. According to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, 70 percent of adults are now fully vaccinated.

“That’s more than 250 million people immunized,” the EU’s chief executive said Tuesday. She spoke of a “great achievement” and a “milestone.”

The EU has successfully caught up. The USA, for example, had initially been much quicker in making vaccination offers to the population. This was mainly due to the fact that very little vaccine was available in the EU at the beginning. Today, the United States lags behind the EU in immunization coverage.

The goal of protecting 70 percent of adults in the EU from Covid-19 through vaccination by the end of the summer was issued by the EU Commission in January. Experts had assumed at the time that around two-thirds of the population would need to be vaccinated in order to stop the Corona pandemic in a country.

Although this hope has been dashed because of the much more contagious delta variant, the pressure on health systems and society has nevertheless been enormously reduced by the vaccination campaign. Immunization has greatly reduced the number of severe cases and deaths. At the same time, many restrictions on public life have been lifted.
