As of Friday, Covid-19 is no longer classified as a disease “threatening the whole of society” in Denmark. This is accompanied by a virtually complete opening of daily life. The high vaccination rate was the deciding factor. Sweden will soon follow suit.

“We can see for the beginning of September that we have a waning epidemic in Denmark! This shows that we are in a good position. The vaccinations and the great effort of all citizens over a long period of time are the basis for this,” Denmark’s Health Minister Magnus Heunicke tweeted at the beginning of the week.

As Heunicke wrote, a major contributor to Denmark’s good current situation is its high vaccination rate. About three-quarters of the population is already fully vaccinated, with the 149 doses of vaccine administered per 100 inhabitants representing a European peak. Denmark aims to reach 90 percent by October.

On the one hand, the high level of willingness to be vaccinated is probably related to the general trust that Danes have in the state, even though individual freedom is also very important to them. On the other hand, the government has also cut a good figure in its dealings with Corona and has been able to explain the sometimes harsh restrictions well. For this reason, the population is likely to have followed its calls to be vaccinated.

However, the vaccination fast train has already slowed down noticeably. Instead of the 50,000 or so injections administered every day in early summer, the figure is now only around 6,000.
