Quarantine rules will be relaxed in schools. Pupils who are considered to be close contacts of an infected person (K1) will be able to clear themselves from quarantine after only five days, instead of the previous ten days, by means of PCR tests. On Tuesday, however, it was still open for a long time who should be classified as a K1 person at all.

Tuesday evening, the Ministry of Health announced that from the 5th grade on, only the direct seat neighbors and other close contacts of the confirmed Covid 19 case should be classified as category 1 contacts. This is already similar for elementary school students. But: the final decision on who is defined as a K1 person remains with local health authorities.

FFP2 masks also mandatory again in churches
At Catholic church services, FFP2 masks are now mandatory again. This is according to a framework order of the Bishops’ Conference published on Tuesday. For baptisms, first communion, confirmation and weddings, the 3G rule applies instead of the mask requirement. Minimum distance is not to be kept, also there are no restrictions on congregational singing.

Children up to the age of six and persons who, with a doctor’s confirmation, cannot wear an MNS for health reasons are exempt from the mask requirement. Pregnant women and children six to 14 may wear an MNS instead of the FFP2 mask, it said. Masks are not required for open-air church services.

What happens if numbers continue to rise
The government’s phased plan calls for the measures taken so far when the utilization rate of intensive care units, or bed occupancy in Austria, is around 10 percent. If the occupancy rate increases, further tightening is planned:

From 15 percent ICU bed occupancy (300 beds).

In night catering (and similar settings), at events without assigned seating with more than 500 people: Admission only for vaccinated and convalescent (2G). One is considered recovered six months after infection, after which recovered persons should also be vaccinated.
Antigen tests with self-collection (living room tests) no longer valid as proof of 3G.
Above 20 percent ICU bed occupancy (400 beds).

Only vaccinated, recovered, or PCR-tested individuals are now considered 3G.
