The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is reviewing an application from vaccine manufacturer Moderna for approval of a third dose. The data submitted should be evaluated under an accelerated procedure, the EMA said Monday in Amsterdam.

The so-called booster could be injected into people aged 12 and older at least six months after the second vaccine dose to increase protection against corona infection.

So far, these boosters are already offered in some countries to people with a weakened immune system. The EMA again stated that, in principle, a third vaccine dose is not necessary as protection against infection.

The decision whether to offer additional vaccine doses would also not be made by the EMA, but was a matter for the EU member states.
