Russia has seen more Corona deaths in a single day than at any time since the pandemic began a good year and a half ago. The authorities announced on Tuesday that 852 infected people had died within 24 hours. For months, the world’s largest country in terms of area, with a population of about 146 million, has already recorded high daily death tolls, and in recent days they have risen even higher.
More than 20,000 new infections every day
According to official Corona statistics, a total of more than 205,500 patients died with the virus. However, a high number of unreported cases is assumed. In Russia, according to the latest figures, only just under 30 percent of the population has been doubly vaccinated – although the country released the world’s first vaccine in August 2020.
With more than 20,000 new infections every day, there is growing concern among the population that there could be new restrictions. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state agency Ria Novosti that each region decides that for itself. He added that the authorities have “special powers.”
