More than five million covid deaths worldwide

Covid-19 deaths worldwide have surpassed five million. That’s according to a Reuters count based on official data. The delta variant caused a surge in deaths, mostly among unvaccinated people. More than half of the world’s population has yet to receive a dose of a vaccine.

According to the Reuters analysis, it took almost a year for the number of Covid-19 deaths to reach 2.5 million. In contrast, the next 2.5 million deaths were recorded within just 236 days.

In Germany, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 8,517 new positive tests. That’s 1,306 more than a week ago Saturday. The seven-day incidence rose slightly to 64.4 from 64.3 the previous day. Sixty-six more people died in connection with the virus. This brought the number of reported deaths within 24 hours to 93,777. Overall, more than 4.2 million coronatests have been positive in Germany so far.
