The EU medicines agency EMA has approved booster vaccinations against coronavirus using the Biontech/Pfizer vaccine. Booster vaccination with the corona vaccine would be eligible for people aged 18 and older, the EMA said Monday. The third vaccination should be given no earlier than six months after the second dose is administered, it said. Austria had previously begun offering a third prick to early first-time vaccinated people – but did so without approval, meaning off-label.
The booster vaccination will be given in this country with the mRNA vaccines from BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna, following a recommendation by the National Immunization Panel (NIG) in mid-August. All people vaccinated first or second with another vaccine should also receive these agents. In the future, people in Austria will be informed about the third sting by letter and asked to get a booster, Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) had announced last Friday.
Some other countries have also already begun to offer booster vaccinations for particularly vulnerable populations. Proponents of a third vaccination argue that an additional vaccination dose increases the protection against infection. Critics, on the other hand, call for people who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus, for example in developing countries, to be immunized first. In addition to the companies Biontech and Pfizer, the U.S. vaccine manufacturer Moderna has also applied for approval for a third vaccination in the EU.
