Sebastian Kurz took a stand Saturday on the future of government in Austria. He announced his resignation as chancellor.
House searches at a number of ÖVP members and at the chancellor’s office have triggered a government crisis. On Friday, Sebastian Kurz stressed that he was “capable of acting and willing to act.”
On Saturday evening, however, he spontaneously announced a statement. In the wake of this, Sebastian Kurz announced his resignation as Chancellor of Austria.
He said he was grateful for the encouragement from his own party and the population. However, “stability and responsibility” are now needed for Austria, he said. “My country is more important to me than my person. Therefore, in order to resolve the stalemate, I would like to make room,” Kurz said of his resignation.
He said he had proposed current Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) to Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen as the new chancellor. Kurz wants to remain party chairman and club chairman of the ÖVP and thus move into the National Council, he said.
