After the turbulent developments of the last 24 hours surrounding the resignation of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has now spoken out for the first time.
“With his move, he has averted damage,” Van der Bellen began with a remark in the direction of Sebastian Kurz. He thanked decision-makers from the other parties who have been “working flat out on possible solutions.” “Is that the end of it? No, it is not,” Van der Bellen said. Trust had been shaken, he said, and it was now up to everyone to restore it. “Words alone are not enough here,” Van der Bellen said. “It can only be done with work, work, work.”
“Would like to apologize”
“I don’t want to shrug off the disrespect that we have seen here. I would like to apologize as Federal President for what kind of image politics has given here.”
To the designated chancellor Alexander Schallenberg he directed: He would now have to earn this trust. The cooperation with Kogler must work, he said, and both Schallenberg and Kogler had given assurances that they would be able to work together.
