Corona vaccination is very effective in protecting against severe disease progression – even in the case of the delta variant – according to a new French study.
“Vaccinated people have a nine times lower risk of being hospitalized or dying from covid-19 than unvaccinated people,” said epidemiologist Mahmoud Zureik, head of the Epi-Phare scientific group, which published the results of its study Monday.
Data from 22 million people studied
The scientists examined data from 22 million people over the age of 50 in the period from Dec. 27, 2020, to July 20. They found that vaccinated people had a 90 percent lower risk of hospitalization or fatal disease two weeks after their second dose than unvaccinated people. The study examined the effect of vaccines from Biontech/Pfizer, Moderna and Astrazeneca.
Protective effect of Corona vaccine against severe disease progression
The latest study confirms similar findings from the U.S., U.K. and Israel. However, according to the French scientists, it is the largest study of its kind to date. Accordingly, it also indicates that protection against severe courses did not decrease over the five-month study period.
For their study, the researchers compared the data of eleven million vaccinated persons with those of eleven million unvaccinated persons. They also took into account gender, age and the region in which they lived.
Protective effect of delta variant similarly high
For the delta variant, Epi-Phare demonstrated a similarly high protective effect: it was 84 percent for people aged 75 and older, and 92 percent for people between 50 and 75. In the case of the delta variant, however, the scientists argued for follow-up studies because the data only covered one month. The highly contagious virus variant had only appeared in France in June.
