Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) is Austria’s new Federal Chancellor. He was sworn in by Federal President Van der Bellen.
He was sworn in on Monday by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen to succeed Sebastian Kurz, who is retiring from the chancellorship to parliament because of the embezzlement and bribery investigations. Also new is Michael Linhart (ÖVP) as Schallenberg’s successor in the Foreign Ministry. Prior to the swearing-in ceremony, Kurz was removed from office as chancellor and Schallenberg as foreign minister.

Van der Bellen reminded Schallenberg and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens), who was also present, in a short speech before the swearing-in ceremony of their responsibility to continue the projects of the coalition (ÖVP and Green) government, but also to restore the people’s trust in politics.
For this, he said, serious concentrated work is needed, as well as real results. “For my part, I trust that the coalition partners will succeed in creating a viable basis for stable government cooperation,” the president said.
