As of November 1, winter equipment is mandatory. Even if it still takes a little while until it snows at lower altitudes, the ÖAMTC recommends changing winter tires as early as October.
Even though the situational winter equipment obligation does not apply until November 1, ÖAMTC says it is slowly getting to be time to think about changing tires. “It may still take a little while until it also snows at lower altitudes. However, summer tires are designed for warmer temperatures, which affects grip and thus road safety on all roads,” says ÖAMTC technician Steffan Kerbl.

To change tires, you should make an appointment as soon as possible. Experience shows that workshops are quickly booked up in the fall. Beforehand, the functionality of the winter tires should be checked. “The tread depth must be at least four millimeters throughout the season,” says the mobility club’s expert. Also, if cracks or other damage are visible, it’s time for new tires.

Also who would like to be on the way in the winter with the bicycle, should think in the sense of the security also about the acquisition of winter tires. “Meanwhile, winter tires for bicycles and e-bikes also exist on the market. Due to the rubber compound and the tread, these definitely have advantages over normal tires,” says the technician.
