CoV flagship country New Zealand today reported more new infections than at any time since the pandemic began. However, there were still only 94 cases out of a population of five million. The previous record was 89 new cases in one day, set in April 2020.
It is important to remember that we are not powerless. We have the ability to keep case numbers as low as possible,” said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. She urged people to stay home, if possible, to save the lives of others and to get vaccinated.
67 percent fully vaccinated
To date, about 67 percent of the adult population has been fully vaccinated. The country has recorded a total of 4,700 infections to date. Twenty-eight people have died in connection with Covid-19. New Zealand had long pursued a so-called zero Covid strategy. Most recently, however, Ardern had to admit that this was hardly feasible with the spread of the highly contagious delta variant.
