More than 3,700 new Corona cases were registered in Austria on Tuesday. The number of new infections has thus once again skyrocketed. On November 1, the 3G rule in the workplace will be implemented. The government hopes that this will ignite another vaccination turbo – the number of jauckerl administered daily had recently been declining more and more.

In the “ZIB2” Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) explained Tuesday night the current Corona situation in Austria. In doing so, he also had a gloomy forecast in his luggage.

“We have had a sideways movement and now the numbers are going up. Over 1,000 registrations from Upper Austria alone, in Burgenland it looks better,” said the department head.

What exactly has triggered the rapid increase in recent days, Mückstein does not (yet) know. “We are monitoring this very closely, there is currently no explanation as to why this is happening now.”

With the 3G on the Job rule unveiled today, he said, the government has created an additional safety net from workplace contagions. At the same time, Mueckstein hopes the testing requirement will boost vaccination. “Unvaccinated people will have to look at getting to a valid test.”

For now, however, these are to remain free of charge. But the idea was already on the table, “We evaluated that in September. We decided today that the tests will remain free of charge.”

Nevertheless, the health minister continues to appeal to all citizens to get vaccinated. Around 85 percent of the population would have to be immunized (vaccinated, recovered) for the pandemic in this country to finally subside in the long term. But we are still a long way from that.

With around 61.93 percent of people vaccinated twice, the progress of vaccination in Austria is still too low to withdraw the measures. The number of cases is currently unknown, and the last antibody study on the number of unreported cases was carried out some time ago. A new one has already been commissioned by Education Minister Heinz Faßmann, but the results are still pending.

That is why Mückstein never tires of emphasizing: “We need more vaccinated people in Austria. Meanwhile, the focus continues to be on education and, above all, voluntariness; a nationwide vaccination requirement, for example for nursing staff, will not come. “But we also know that especially the nursing staff in 5 to 10 percent would not accept a vaccination obligation” – but these employees would be urgently needed.

Although the current phased plan of Corona measures is linked to the utilization of intensive care units and not the daily new infections (Mückstein: “a wise decision”) – but even there the minister expects an increase soon. His gloomy prediction: “We will reach the second and third stage!” That means tighter covid rules across the country – get the details in the infographic below.

However, there are currently no plans for a nationwide lockdown: “Restricting vaccinated people just doesn’t make sense. We need to continue to vaccinate and protect the unvaccinated.”

“If we can be sure that ICUs will not have problems, then we can lift the measures again. We need to explain to people now how important it is to vaccinate. Vaccination is the only way out of the pandemic.”
