In Romania, the next wave of the coronavirus pandemic has arrived with full force. With a 7-day incidence of 539.2, the country is currently among the worst affected in the world. The development in the death toll is particularly dramatic, as the health care system is completely overloaded. The background is low vaccination rates, and a government crisis is also paralyzing the fight against the pandemic.
More than 17,150 new infections within 24 hours had reported the Romanian health authorities on Wednesday. 1,799 coronavirus patients are being treated intensively throughout the country – some in hospital corridors, containers, tents and ambulances. Because the notoriously underfunded hospitals are now hopelessly overloaded. There are only 1,668 places in intensive care units. Romania has already sent 30 seriously ill patients to neighboring Hungary.
Several doctors recently spoke of “war-like conditions” in the hospitals. The development in the number of deaths is also dramatic. In the past 24 hours alone, more people have died from or with the coronavirus in Romania than in the entire EU in the same period: 574. So far, more than 42,600 deaths have been recorded in Romania, according to the ECDC.
