While the Italian government is facing protests against the “3-G” requirement for all workers, which has been in effect since October 15, the cabinet is setting new vaccination targets. For example, Health Minister Roberto Speranza wants to vaccinate 90 percent of the population. “This is an ambitious goal that is within our reach,” said Speranza, guest of the program “Mezz’ora in +” broadcast by Rai 3 yesterday.
According to government figures, 86 percent of Italians over the age of 12 have received at least one vaccine dose. Italy has already begun administering the third dose to the elderly and infirm and to people over the age of 60. Starting next year, the entire population over the age of twelve could receive the third dose. “We have enough doses for the third sting,” the health minister said.
Despite nationwide protests, the government is sticking with the “3-G” requirement, saying infection rates are on the rise. “We believe that the ‘3-G’ requirement is essential at this time, as it allows us to keep all places open for socializing, culture, restaurants, schools and universities,” the minister said.
The government is also prepared to extend the state of emergency beyond Dec. 31, 2021, due to the pandemic in Italy, if the situation remains tense, he said. The state of emergency, declared on Jan. 31, 2020, is the basis for several decrees the government has taken to protect public health.
