As of today, Monday, November 8, stricter Corona measures will apply in Austria with the 2G regulation. Those who are neither vaccinated nor recovered will be barred from virtually all public entertainment. We have all the questions and answers at a glance.

Austria becomes a 2G country
It took a long time, but Sunday evening the Ministry of Health presented the new rules that will apply from Monday to combat the Corona pandemic. Below is an overview.

New Corona regulation: what will apply with the 2G rule in the future.
What counts as 2G?

As far as convalescents are concerned, they must have been recovered no more than six months ago. People are considered vaccinated if their second immunization was no more than nine months ago. There is a transition period for those who are short of time. Those who get vaccinated now can also visit 2G areas for four weeks (until Dec. 6) with a PCR test. After that, however, the second prick must be done.

Another special rule applies to those immunized with Johnson&Johnson’s vaccine, which was originally designed as a single-use vaccine. They must revaccinate by January 2 or they will not meet 2G from then on. Another special rule will be of particular interest to seasonal workers in tourism. Those who already have proof of neutralizing antibodies at the time of vaccination (for example, through the Sputnik vaccination, which is not valid in the EU) can obtain proof of vaccination as early as the time of first vaccination with a vaccine approved by the EMA (e.g., Biontech/Pfizer, Moderna).

To whom does 2G apply?
All persons after the end of compulsory education, i.e. older than 15, for whom a regular vaccination opportunity exists, fall under the 2G rules. Excluded are people for whom vaccination is impossible for health reasons and children up to twelve completely. For adolescents up to 15, the so-called Ninja Pass, which maps school tests, is recognized under 2G.

Where does 2G apply?
2G applies everywhere where 3G previously applied. This means, for example, that you can only go to cinemas, theaters, concerts, the hairdresser, the pedicure, the gym or sporting events if you have been vaccinated or have recovered. Visits to hospitals and nursing homes are also only possible if you meet 2G. Exceptions are visits in the field of palliative and hospice care or birth attendance, where you can alternatively put on an FFP2 mask.

What is the situation in hotels?
In the hotel industry, 2G applies. However, various exceptions have been defined, but these do not apply to classic vacations. However, anyone who visits a hotel, for example, for urgent business reasons or to satisfy an urgent need for accommodation, merely has to be tested.

What applies to staff in the catering and hotel industry?
While guests are covered by 2G, staff in hotels and restaurants can also submit a test. However, in sensitive environments such as night catering or large events, a PCR test is still required.

Where else can you go with 3G or without it all?
Tested one can still go to work. The less effective antigen tests are also recognized, which is mainly due to the lack of availability in rural areas. 72 hours is a PCR test, 24 hours is an antigen test. The same rules are also provided for competitive athletes, since their competition site is effectively the place of work.

3G in the workplace will be taken seriously on November 15. Trade and public transport will remain open to the unvaccinated and those who have not yet contracted the disease.

Where to put on a mask?
The mask is to be worn (apart from public transport and train stations) in commerce and in museums and libraries. An FFP2 mask is now a requirement throughout the country, as it has been for some time in Vienna. There is no mask requirement in 2G environments such as inns or hotels.

What is the procedure for funerals?
For funerals that take place indoors and involve more than 50 people, FFP2 masks are mandatory. On the other hand, there is no FFP2 mask requirement if everyone present has a 2-G certificate.

Will anything change at the schools?
No

How long will the new rules apply?
No official end is planned.

Can it be stricter?
Yes, whether it’s a hospital, theater or restaurant, each facility can also set stricter entry requirements (e.g., wearing masks or an additional test on 2G) through its house rules.

What will happen to the exit controls?
The exit controls from the districts will be cancelled. This is due to the strong spread of infections, which has made these measures more or less pointless in Upper Austria, for example. Actually, it should serve to prevent infections from a certain district from spreading to neighboring regions.
