The chancellor’s office on Tuesday denied circulating rumors about an allegedly imminent Austria-wide lockdown. The reason: news was spread via various messenger services, including Whatsapp, that a lockdown with closed pubs and nighttime curfews would apply from November 17, 2021. No sources were given in the messages.
These claims “are false and have no basis in fact,” it said on Tuesday in this regard from the Chancellery.
Possible cause for the rumors might have been the statements of Federal Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) from last Friday, when he had announced together with Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) tightening of the Corona measures. At that time, he had emphasized that they did not want a lockdown for “protected” persons, i.e. those vaccinated against the coronavirus.
Fact: The government’s phased plan includes exit restrictions for the unvaccinated starting at an intensive care bed occupancy of 600. Another fact: As of Monday, 377 people were being cared for in intensive care units for contracting Covid-19.
The government hopes that the 2-G rule, which is now in effect, will result in more people getting vaccinated in wide areas than before – and that the number of ICU patients will decrease again as a result.
