Daughter following in father’s footsteps. Sara Duterte aligns herself with former President Gloria Arroyo.
Sara Duterte, the daughter of outgoing Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, will run for vice president in the May presidential election. The Southeast Asian country’s Commission on Elections announced Saturday on Facebook that Duterte will replace another candidate in the process. The announcement was made shortly before the Nov. 15 deadline for candidates to file late.
The current Davao City mayor had resigned from her regional party on Thursday and joined the party of her ally, former President Gloria Arroyo. In doing so, she had further fueled speculation that she would run to succeed her father.
“I thank my supporters. I hope that in the next few days I can give them what they want,” Duterte said Thursday on the sidelines of a wedding in Manila. She had earlier renounced to run again for her current mayoral post. According to opinion polls, the president’s daughter has a good chance in the May election.
The president and vice president are elected separately in the Philippines. If the president dies, becomes incapacitated or resigns during his term, his deputy takes office.
