Anyone who wants to visit a Christkindlmarkt now should not only have a lot of patience, but also a green passport and an ID card, otherwise nothing will work. The 2G rule applies to visitors. According to the city, an expansion to 2G+ is not (yet) being considered.
At Rathausplatz, the city’s largest Christmas market, visitors were jammed Sunday afternoon at the entrance on the Ring. Securitys control the green passport, want to see also an identity card. Those who did not have one with them had to turn around again. Fortunately, Wiener Linien annual passes are also accepted as proof of identity. If you want to get to the market faster, you should use the entrance at Lichtenfelsgasse. Yesterday, there were significantly fewer visitors queuing up for checks here.
At Spittelberg, a different concept is used because of the neighbors: everyone can walk through the romantic “Hütteldorf” in Neubau. Food and drink, however, are only available to those guests who have a control band on their arm. This is available at the information booths upon presentation of a green passport and ID.
The situation is completely different in the center of Vienna in front of St. Stephen’s Cathedral: here, the already busy stallholders are left to check the 2G documents themselves. No security guards were seen in the afternoon. In the hustle and bustle, 2G proofs were checked, but not IDs; the lines were too long. “We’ve already sent many away,” said one vendor.
