The coronavirus traffic light is as red as it has ever been. All states remain in very high risk red and have a record distance to the next area, orange. This one still means high risk.

The figures from the worst-performing states illustrate just how far off that is in large parts of the country. Tyrol stands at 1,615 and Salzburg at 1,604. In all the provinces, the 14-day trend points steeply upward. Even among the particularly vulnerable group of over-65s, the trend is upward everywhere. Only Vienna, Burgenland, Carinthia and Styria are not likely to have exceeded the critical 33 percent mark in intensive care units in 14 days.

In some places, however, asymptomatic cases are hardly ever detected. In Tyrol, the corresponding rate is zero percent, in Vorarlberg three. Only Vienna, thanks to its testing strategy, still detects 52 percent of cases that occur without symptoms.

Upward trend in all districts
The federal capital has by far the largest number of tests to thank for this. In relation to 100,000 inhabitants, there were almost 99,000 tests in Vienna last week. Compared to Lower Austria, Tyrol and Vorarlberg, which brought up the rear, this is around three times as many.

There is also a lack of contact tracing. In Upper Austria, just 14 percent of cases are detected. The best situation is in Burgenland, where the source of infection is identified in 51 percent of cases. The national average is 29 percent.

The fact that the wave is not leaving out any region of the country can be seen from the fact that there is now not a single district where there is no upward trend. Gänserndorf in Lower Austria has the lowest crude case incidence, still at a remarkable 453. The risk-adjusted number of cases, which also takes into account other factors such as the age of the patients, is just under 4,755 in Lienz in East Tyrol, for example.
