The third prick of the Corona vaccine, known as a booster, is turning out to be increasingly important. “Efficacy and safety of vaccines are continuously monitored further, which is why it is now also clear that basic immunization includes a third vaccination after about six months,” emphasized Robin Rumler, Pfizer’s country manager in Austria. The pharmaceutical company has developed Biontech, one of the vaccines approved to date.
In addition to the four vaccines already approved throughout the EU, other vaccines are in the pipeline, including other technologies. These include an inactivated vaccine with know-how from Austria. “The Phase III trial of our SARS-CoV-2 vaccine has shown high efficacy with good tolerability. The EMA will start reviewing shortly and we expect to be able to make another Covid vaccine available from around April 2022,” Thomas Lingelbach, chief executive of Austro-French company Valneva, reported in the release. Still, he said, he encourages anyone who has not yet been vaccinated to get immunized now with a vaccine that has already been approved.
According to the Vaccine Manufacturers Association (ÖVIH), research continues on effective ways to adapt vaccines to new variants, should that become necessary. Also under development are vaccine combinations, such as a vaccine that can be administered against covid-19 and influenza.
Drugs aimed at providing protection for groups of people who do not respond to vaccination due to pre-existing conditions or other reasons, or for whom vaccination is medically not an option, may also come onto the market in the future.
