The Philippines will soon reopen its borders to international tourism – but only to fully vaccinated vacationers from “green” countries with high vaccination rates and low infection rates. The National Task Force to Contain the CoV Pandemic is still working on the final details for the rules, presidential spokesman Karlo Nograles said today.

“But we are informing the whole world in advance that we will soon open our shores to tourists from countries on the Green List.” There are currently 43 countries and territories on the list, including China, Taiwan, Japan, Pakistan, Rwanda and the Falkland Islands.

European countries are not on it so far. The Southeast Asian island nation, known for its landscapes, volcanoes and dream beaches, has closed its borders to international vacationers since March 2020. The gradual opening should help revive the local economy, Tourism Minister Berna Romulo Puyat said.

The Philippines, with a population of about 110 million, has long been one of the hardest hit countries in the region by the pandemic. A total of about 2.82 million cases have been recorded so far, and more than 46,000 people have died in connection with Covid-19. However, infection figures have recently dropped significantly and have been hovering between 1,000 and 2,500 new infections a day for days.
