This is how often you need to go for Corona vaccination booster in the future
The delta mutant of the corona virus turned out to be much more dangerous and contagious than the original variant. The case of the Corona vaccine also shows how dangerous Delta is. Despite immunization, more and more people are becoming infected with the virus. The vaccination does not offer 100 percent protection against infection, but it does prevent severe courses in the event of an illness.
In order to be protected well enough, many people need to have their vaccination refreshed months earlier. Immunity to the virus decreases over time. The third sting, the so-called “booster vaccination,” is therefore now crucial in the fight against the pandemic. This is how the so-called basic immunization is achieved. But what happens after the booster? Do we have to vaccinate every few months to maintain immunity?
For Biontech CEO Ugur Sahin, annual booster vaccinations against the coronavirus seem likely. According to his assumption, this could be sufficient. The third vaccinations that have now begun would raise, “boost”, the protection that has diminished over time, Sahin described in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”.
He expects protection against the virus after basic immunization to last longer “than protection after double vaccination.” Subsequent booster vaccinations would then be necessary “perhaps only every year, similar to influenza.”
The expert told the newspaper that the decline in vaccination protection begins “from the fourth month.” However, recently published studies show that protection against severe disease is still very high up to the ninth month.
For this reason, Sahin appeals to vaccinated people to get the booster: “On the one hand, a booster protects the vaccinated person very well from getting sick, but it also helps break further chains of infection.” This could help in dealing with the pandemic in the upcoming difficult winter, he said.
