Booster vaccination raises antibody levels significantly more than first and second vaccinations, U.S. researchers report.

After booster doses with an mRNA vaccine, protection against severe covid 19 disease lasts longer than after the first two vaccinations. That’s according to a new, small study published on medRxiv but not yet peer-reviewed.

Antibody levels increased 25-fold
Antibody levels were measured before and after booster vaccination in 33 healthy middle-aged adults who had received their second dose an average of nine months earlier.

Before the boosters, their antibody levels had decreased about tenfold compared to the levels at the start of the second dose. Six to 10 days after the boosters, their antibody levels had increased 25-fold and were five times higher than after two doses of the vaccine.

For those who recovered – they had Covid-19 prior to vaccination – antibody levels were 50 times higher after the booster than after their infections. “Because these antibody levels are so robust, the booster could potentially give us protection longer than two doses of the vaccine,” said Alexis Demonbreun, co-author of the study from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
