Austrian travel returnees from South African countries are to be identified. They must show a negative PCR test and enter a ten-day quarantine. The Austrian Armed Forces are inspecting and keeping an eye on transfer airports, Ö1’s “Morgenjournal” reported Sunday.
The tightening of entry requirements has been in effect since Saturday. South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia and Eswatini have been classified as virus variant areas. Entry from these countries is prohibited. In addition, a landing ban has been imposed on flights from these seven African countries.
Strict requirements for Austrians on return
Austrian citizens are allowed to return. On the part of the Foreign Ministry, they were even called on Saturday to go home. For this, however, strict guidelines then apply. “Travelers from these areas must register at the latest at the entry control at the airport, announce the place of residence in this region, show a negative PCR test, must enter a ten-day quarantine, including vaccinated and convalescents,” said airport spokesman Peter Kleemann in the “Morgenjournal”.
In the course of the checks, the federal army keeps an eye on courses via known transfer airports. Explicitly checked for their travel history are passengers arriving at Schwechat from the airports Addis Ababa, Amsterdam, Paris (Charles de Gaulle), Dubai, Doha, Frankfurt, Cairo, Istanbul and Zurich, Kleemann told APA. Increased attention is paid in these cases to “whether the persons may have previously come from countries in southern Africa,” stressed army spokesman Sebastian Schubert in the “Morgenjournal.”
