The number of new CoV infections registered in Africa has almost doubled within a week. More than 107,000 cases of infection were reported within seven days, 93 percent more than in the previous week, the Africa office of the World Health Organization (WHO) announced yesterday. It said a “sign of hope” was that despite the emergence of the Omicron variant and the increase in new infections, hospital admissions remained low.
What initially remained unclear, according to WHO, was the proportion of new infections accounted for by Omicron cases – and thus the proportion of the jump in infections. However, it currently appears that Omicron is causing a “less severe” course of disease than previous variants of the coronavirus. The number of hospital admissions for covid-19 is at a low level, he said.
The WHO office again called for an acceleration of the vaccination campaign in Africa. Of the approximately 1.2 billion people on the continent, only 7.8 percent have been vaccinated against the coronavirus so far.
