The first neighboring country has copied Austria’s mandatory vaccination and is introducing one as well. However, it will not apply to all citizens.
In Austria, the draft of the upcoming compulsory vaccination law has been available for a few hours. It is to be fixed with February 2022. All persons starting from the age of 14, who have their main domicile in Austria or have a main domicile confirmation, must be vaccinated. Each quarter, the law provides for a “vaccination cut-off date” on which all persons recorded in the vaccination register are checked.
Unvaccinated persons are sent a reminder to be vaccinated shortly before the deadline; if they fail to comply, a penalty notice is issued by the relevant district authority. Penalties are issued on a quarterly basis, with either due process or, alternatively, summary process. In the abbreviated case, up to 600 euros are due immediately; if no payment is made or an appeal is lodged, ordinary proceedings are initiated.
In this case, the fine increases to up to 3,600 euros. However, one can show “active remorse”, who vaccinates when receiving a fine, does not have to pay the fine. On Friday, the Czech Republic is now following Austria’s plans. The government has decided to make Corona vaccination compulsory for all people aged 60 and over. This will come into force on March 1, 2022, but will also oblige many occupational groups such as police officers, doctors, health personnel, medical students and soldiers, as well as firefighters.
It has not yet been decided whether the vaccination requirement will be enforced, because the current government will soon have to make way for a new government consisting of five parties that have spoken out against compulsory vaccination. The decision could also be overturned by the designated health minister, Vlastimil Valek, who spoke of a “step into the dark”. The Czech Republic currently has a rather low vaccination rate of 60.4 percent.
