Under the slogan “#YesWeCare – the #Sea of Lights”, a rally was held this evening in Vienna on the Ring, which was intended, among other things, to commemorate the now more than 13,000 Corona deaths in Austria.
At 7 p.m., more than 30,000 participants gathered on the street for about ten minutes, according to police. They carried candles, lamps or had the lights of their cell phones switched on.
Sea of lights in Vienna reminded of Corona dead
Shortly after 18.00 o’clock numerous people had gathered along the ring. This was closed at 18.45 for the car traffic.
The sea of lights participants had largely refrained from bringing banners, flags, drums or whistles. The Viennese public transport company “Wiener Linien” put “Yes we care” signs on its Bim display boards. Punctually at 19.00 o’clock the lights brought along were stretched into the height. The end after about ten minutes was acknowledged with cheers and applause. There were no speeches.
As a spokesman for the police, published by APA, the number of participants is relatively difficult to estimate – because the ring was differently well attended. Very many people showed up, for example, at the Opera House or at the City Hall. But in any case, more than 30,000 people may have participated, it was said. No incidents were reported for the time being.
Austrian President Van der Bellen also lit candle at Hofburg Palace
Pledges of support for the sea of lights came from numerous organizations, including the trade union, Volkshilfe, the medical association and religious communities. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen also declared his solidarity. The head of state placed a candle in a window of the Hofburg.
Chains of lights were also formed in several places in Vorarlberg. According to police, a total of 600 people took part in the actions.
