In Austria, 365 coronavirus cases with the Omicron variant have already been confirmed, according to current data from the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES). While 49 cases were detected in calendar week 49 from December 6 to 12, there were already 278 detections in the past week, i.e. from December 12 to 19. This corresponds to an increase of 467 percent.
The most cases of B.1.1.529 there are so far with 238 in Vienna. The federal capital, however, is the only one in which all positive PCR samples are pre-tested for virus variants. In Upper Austria there have been 41 confirmed Omicron cases so far, in Lower Austria 29, in Tyrol 28 and in Salzburg ten. In Burgenland, there have so far been eight confirmed Omicron infected persons, in Vorarlberg five, in Styria four and in Carinthia only two.
The first time Omicron was confirmed in Austria was in calendar week 47 from November 22 to 28. At that time, there were six infected persons who had been proven to be infected with B.1.1.529.
The geneticist Ulrich Elling recently criticized that far too little sequencing is being done in Austria. The available information is too incomplete to be able to estimate the estimated number of actual Omicron cases. For many regions in Austria, all we know is “that we don’t know anything,” the researcher said on Tuesday.
