On Wednesday, the federal government and state governors discussed the situation. Katharina Reich, head of the new crisis body “GECKO” (Gesamtstaatliche Covid-Krisenkoordinierung) explained the new Covid rules starting December 27.

An overview of the new Covid rules:

Christmas rules
On December 24, 25 and 26, the still-applicable lockdown for the unvaccinated will have a break, at least for celebrations among small groups of friends and family. For gatherings of up to ten people, it doesn’t matter what their immune status is. For larger gatherings of 11 to 25 people, 2-G proof is required. Group size restrictions apply including children.

Tightening starting Dec. 27
The general lockdown for the unvaccinated resumes Monday. But Corona rules will also be tightened for the vaccinated and recovered due to the spreading Omikron variant. This mainly affects events, but also the restaurant industry. The closing time for pubs will be brought forward to 10pm. Events as well as meetings without assigned seating are limited to 25 people. With assigned seating, events with a maximum of 500 visitors are possible under the 2-G rule.

If these also have a PCR test (2-G plus), up to 1,000 people are allowed. And then there is now also the category “boosted and tested”. Those who already have three stings and are also PCR-tested are allowed to participate in events with up to 2,000 people. All of this applies inside and out.

New Year’s Eve without a party
On Dec. 31, curfew restrictions for the unvaccinated will be relaxed again, allowing them to meet friends and family under the same rules as on the Christmas holiday. The lifting of curfew announced for New Year’s Eve will not happen after all. The inns will have to close at 10 p.m. on that day as well, according to the new rules. The “Gecko” recommends celebrating New Year’s Eve only in a small circle and better outdoors instead of indoors to avoid infections.

Start of the third Corona year
It is still unclear what will happen after January 1. Further tightening is possible depending on the assessment of the situation. If these do not come, apply to the start into the meanwhile third Corona year for vaccinated ones and recovered ones the past rules – extended by the tightenings presented on Wednesday. All others remain excluded from trade, gastronomy, hotel business and events.
