The fifth Corona wave is picking up speed with the spread of the infectious Omicron variant. This is best seen in Vienna, where the majority of PCR tests in Austria are evaluated, and only in Vienna are all positive PCR tests also checked for the Omicron variant.
As of Tuesday afternoon, 1,330 Omicron cases have been detected in Vienna so far, according to an inquiry from the office of Vienna’s City Health Councillor Peter Hacker, published by DER STANDARD. 49 cases are already inactive.
In the federal capital, there has thus been more than a doubling of the number of cases in just two days: Because on Sunday, there were still a total of 552 active cases. The Omicron mutation has already been dominant in Vienna since St. Stephen’s Day.
In the last two days alone, the number of active Omicron cases in Vienna has increased by 729. This is remarkable, as currently there is much less testing due to holidays and school vacations.
In Vienna, it is assumed that despite the lack of official figures, the Omicron variant is also dominant throughout Austria. “There is absolutely no reason to assume that this is not already the case throughout Austria,” says Hacker’s office.
