Large parties are cancelled again. After 10 p.m., parties are also only permitted with a maximum of ten people – regardless of vaccination status. There are changes for the evenings after New Year’s Eve.

How many people are allowed to toast the new year together?

Up to ten or up to 25, depending on whether the group includes only vaccinated or recovered guests: In that case, there may be up to 25. If non-immunized people are present, the number is reduced to ten participants, or in other words: from eleven people onwards, the 2-G rule applies – and, in purely legal terms, masks are compulsory.

Is there a time limit?

In the hotel and restaurant industry, the closing time is 10 p.m. According to the current draft for New Year’s Eve regulations, there is also a general limit on people after 10 p.m.: A maximum of ten people are then still allowed to celebrate together – this maximum number applies from this point on for all gatherings, including those that are vaccinated and recovered, even in private. This measure is intended to discourage larger parties. The amendment to the Covid Protective Measures Ordinance is expected to be approved by the main committee of the National Council on Thursday.

Does the lockdown for non-immunized people also apply on New Year’s Eve?

Yes and no. Those who are not vaccinated or recovered are allowed to participate in celebrations in private, but just with the maximum limit of ten people. For New Year’s Eve, as for the Christmas holidays before, the initial grounds have been extended to include these small gatherings. Local or hotels remain however taboo, likewise the trade off supermarkets or drugstores as well as body near service providers, here applies as well known 2-G.

How are children counted at New Year’s Eve celebrations?

They are included in the permitted number of guests. So, depending on the composition of the group, a maximum of ten or 25 guests applies – including children, regardless of age.

Are friends allowed to celebrate in the same establishment?

Yes, if everyone has a 2-G permit. However, there is a closing time at 10 p.m.

Does it make a difference whether you meet outdoors or in an apartment?

Not really. The Covid Protective Measures Ordinance applies the same everywhere. The person limit or the possible need for 2-G proof apply in a public place just as they do in a single-family home. It’s just that gatherings in private areas are not very controllable.

And what applies after New Year’s Eve?

The ordinance for after New Year’s Eve has also been changed a bit. In the future, gatherings of ten vaccinated and recovered people will be allowed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. – with no distinction between adults and children. This affects the time after the New Year’s Eve exemption that was in effect until January 1.

Previously, with “2-G” – that is, for vaccinated and recovered – meetings of up to four adults and six children were permitted at night. That distinction is now waived. After 10 p.m., only gatherings of “no more than ten people from different households” are allowed.

What is allowed during the day – after New Year’s Eve?

Between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m., a maximum of 25 people with proof of vaccination or recovery are allowed to gather (more people are allowed at gatherings or events with seating assignments or other conditions such as the presentation of a negative test result).

For the unvaccinated, the strict lockdown exit restrictions – relaxed for New Year’s Eve celebrations – will go back into effect on January 2.
