Omicron is dominating Austria. In Upper Austria, the number of cases has more than quadrupled – within just one week.

At Christmas, we had 107 confirmed Omicron cases, and 455 Upper Austrians are currently infected.

This means that the number of people infected with Omicron in Upper Austria has more than quadrupled since December 26.

In Vienna, in the chancellor’s office, there will be a Corona summit on Tuesday – also because of Omicron. A press spokesman for the General Governmental Corona Crisis Coordination (GECKO) on Sunday: “Because of the virus variant, very rapid changes are to be expected.”

At the summit: government and GECKO leaders. And the nine state governors, who will participate via video conference. The summit is expected to last two hours.

It is still unclear whether there will be new measures or even a new lockdown. Rumor has it that a new lockdown will start on January 10 (the day school is supposed to start again).

A booster vaccination can protect against Omicron. In the meantime, almost 600,000 Upper Austrians have received a third sting. In total, more than one million Upper Austrians have now been vaccinated.

In order to further increase the vaccination rate, the vaccination lottery in Upper Austria is still running until January 14. The main prize is an electric BMW. In the meantime, 305,919 Upper Austrians have registered for the lottery.

In Lower Austria, 80 new cases of the Omicron variant of the Corona virus were recorded on Sunday.

This brought the total number to 614, of which 489 people were actively ill, according to the provincial medical staff. The average age of those affected increased to 34.2.

Corona cluster in Lower Austria
In the Corona cluster in the Traiskirchen initial reception center (Baden district), the number of infected persons increased from 21 to 22. In a production company in the Scheibbs district, there was also a cluster with 14 ill persons.
