In Great Britain, driven by the Omicron variant, more than 200,000 new Corona infections have been recorded within one day for the first time. Within 24 hours, 218,724 cases were reported, the government said Tuesday. In addition, 48 deaths were recorded, it said. The national health service NHS warned of an overload of hospitals because of the many quarantined employees.
At least six hospitals reported “critical incidents” Tuesday, meaning the situation could affect priority care. Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised to take action to fill staffing gaps in the hardest-hit areas. As reported by The Sunday Times, some 50,000 NHS staff were absent from work last week because they were ill or isolating themselves.
Transport operators also struggled with cancellations, leaving commuters with long waits to return to work after a national holiday on Monday. Anyone who tests positive for coronavirus must self-isolate for ten days. However, calls to ease these restrictions on health workers were ruled out by Health Minister Sajid Javid. With a total of almost 149,000 corona deaths, the UK is one of the countries in Europe most severely affected by the pandemic.
