8,853 Corona infections were reported in Austria on Thursday. Although this was slightly fewer than the day before – when the number of new cases had jumped dramatically from around 5,500 to 9,761 within 24 hours – the figure is once again well above the average for the previous seven days (5,421). The seven-day incidence on Thursday was now also already 424.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, after 361.8 on Wednesday.

As of Thursday, there are 51,364 active cases in Austria, 6,374 more than the day before. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,312,939 confirmed infections. Most new cases were reported in Vienna (2,223), followed by Lower Austria (1,294), Salzburg (1,235), Tyrol (1,200) and Upper Austria (1,166). This was followed by Styria (796), Carinthia (435), Vorarlberg (362) and Burgenland (142).

The number of Covid deaths has also risen again – 21 deaths have occurred since Wednesday, with a seven-day average of 17.4 per day. A total of 122 Covid-19-related deaths have been recorded over the past seven days. In total, the pandemic has claimed 13,823 lives in Austria so far. Per 100,000 population, 154.7 people have now died from or with Covid-19.

There were 971 people in hospital, according to health authority data, 39 fewer than on Wednesday. 295 people were being cared for in intensive care units. That number dropped by 14 since Wednesday and is down by 50 patients in a week. On Epiphany, it was below 300 for the first time since Nov. 1 last year (292 at the time).

Recovered since the outbreak of the epidemic are 1,247,752 people, and within the past 24 hours, 2,458 were considered recovered.
