The more infectious Omicron variant continues to cause case numbers to rise in Austria: Within the past 24 hours, 16,685 new Corona infections and 20 additional fatalities were registered.

On Tuesday, the ministries reported the fourth highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic. Hospitals are again having to treat more than 1,000 Covid 19 patients, and the number of critically ill patients in intensive care units continues to decline.

Utilization in hospitals on the rise
For the first time in four months, fewer than 200 intensive care patients need care. 197 critically ill patients required treatment in Austrian ICUs on Tuesday, 15 fewer than on Monday. The last time there were fewer than 200 was at the start of the then fourth wave on September 15. 198 seriously ill patients were in intensive care units at that time.

Experts had already warned that Omicron could put pressure on normal wards instead of ICUs. In domestic hospitals, bed occupancy is rising again with Covid 19 patients in normal wards. A total of 1,012 sick people were in hospitals Tuesday, up 79 from Monday. There was a nine percent increase in patients since last week. Significant increases were recorded, for example, Carinthia with plus 26 percent within one week or Lower Austria with plus 17 percent.

Current figures on coronavirus in Austria:
Burgenland: 237
Carinthia: 685
Lower Austria: 2,678
Upper Austria: 3,002
Salzburg: 1,333
Styria: 1,362
Tyrol: 2,123
Vorarlberg: 907
Vienna: 4,358
The 16,685 Corona infections within 24 hours also pushes the seven-day average above 16,000. It was already 16,321 on Tuesday, and the seven-day incidence rose to 1,279 cases per 100,000 population. As of Tuesday, there are 147,920 confirmed active cases in Austria, up 6,539 from the previous day.

20 deaths reported in 24 hours
The 20 deaths are the highest 24-hour total since January 6. In the past week alone, 70 deaths were recorded. Overall, the Covid 19 pandemic has already claimed 13,942 lives in Austria since it broke out. Per 100,000 population, 156.1 people have died from or with Covid-19.
