After several days of mishaps surrounding new infections in Austria, Corona figures are now available again. More than 22,400 cases have been registered.
This brings the new infection numbers in the Omikron wave well above the 20,000 mark. After several days of outages, the Interior and Health Ministries provided Corona figures for Thursday through Saturday, inclusive, on Saturday evening: Accordingly, 24,314 new Corona cases had been reported on Thursday, 25,346 on Friday and 24,260 on Saturday within 24 hours (as of 9:30 a.m. each day). However, the data problems – caused by the high number of cases – have not been eliminated.
Up to and including Saturday, including 17 subsequently reported deaths, 13,985 people have died of Covid-19 in Austria since the outbreak of the pandemic. Back-calculated to the past seven days, a total of 70 deaths were recorded. 1,126 people were receiving treatment in a hospital for the Corona virus over the weekend, up 18 from Friday. 194 were treated in an intensive care unit, down by five from Friday. In one week, the number of severe covid cases in hospitals has decreased by 20.
According to the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) Corona Dashboard, the incidence continued to rise to now 1,767.0 new cases per 100,000 population over the past seven days (as of 2 p.m. Saturday). In absolute numbers, this amounted to 157,836 affected persons. Thus, in the past week, more people have been infected with the coronavirus in Austria than the city of Salzburg has inhabitants.
The province with the highest seven-day incidence is now Tyrol with 2,604.0, followed by Salzburg (2,558.7) and Vienna (2,305.8). It is lowest in Styria (1,157.0) and Burgenland (1,187.1). Carinthia (1,322.6), Lower Austria (1,346.6) and Upper Austria (1,618.0) are also below the Austrian average. Vorarlberg holds at 1,767.4.
