Have you ever taken a closer look at your driver’s license?

In particular, many driver’s license holders pay no further attention to the back. But there is a detail hidden there that you should be aware of – if it is also noted on your license, you could face a fine if you don’t comply.

Nothing can be noted under item 12 on the back of your driver’s license, as in the above case. For millions of people, however, there is a note here with the code number 01. But why?

Item 12 contains restrictions and additional information related to the driver’s license, and the ominous 01 stands for people with impaired vision. If the eye test you took at driving school revealed a visual impairment, you must wear a visual aid when driving.

Special entries in the driver’s license: The meanings of the number codes at a glance.

Special entries in the driver’s license are made by means of numerical codes in the format xx.xx. These codes have a uniform meaning within the EU or in the EEA states, so they can also be correctly assigned when driving abroad.

Numerical codes in the driver’s license
The numerical codes in the driver’s license are divided into different sections. The first two digits always refer to a specific category, such as “01” for vision correction. The last two digits are the so-called subcode and provide further details. For example, the code “01.01” refers to the obligation to wear glasses, while the code “01.02” refers to the obligation to wear contact lenses when driving.

Numerical codes in the driver’s license
Codes 01. to 03. – driver, medical reasons
Codes 10. to 50. – various vehicle adaptations
Codes 61st to 69th – limited use
Codes 70. to 79. – administrative reasons
Codes 104. to 120. – valid only in Austria

The codes in the driver’s license can be seen in §2 of the Führerscheingesetz-Durchführungsverordnung. Here is an overview of some of the most common codes:

Codes 01. to 03. – Driver, medical reasons.
The codes 01. to 03. in the driver’s license refer to the driver and indicate which medical aids the driver has to use when driving the respective motor vehicle. The codes and subcodes from the medical reasons section have the following meanings:

Code 01 Correction of vision and/or eye protection.
01.01 Eyeglasses
01.02 Contact lens(es)
01.05 Eye protection
01.06 Glasses or contact lenses
01.07 Specific optical aid

Attention: The codes regulate exactly which visual aid must be used. So, with the entered code 01.01, it is not allowed to use contact lenses instead of glasses while driving. If glasses or contact lenses may be used optionally, code 01.06 must be entered in the driver’s license.

Codes beginning with 02. refer to hearing prostheses or communication aids. Codes 03. require the driver to wear a prosthesis(s) or orthosis(s) of the limbs.
