The onset of winter has brought snow as far as the lowlands. There, however, he will not be able to hold for long. “Already on Friday, we get 10 degrees plus in Vienna. The weekend will also be in double digits,” says meteorologist Roland Reiter of Ubimet.
That applies to the entire Danube region. And even in alpine locations, a mild Atlantic current will ensure warm temperatures. And that is expected throughout the coming week, which is a vacation week for children in the provinces of Vienna and Lower Austria.
“For skiing, this is optimal. You don’t need to dress so warmly,” says the weather professional. Even in Kitzbühel, for example, it will be around five degrees next week. Snow is plentiful in the mountains along the northern side of the Alps after the heavy precipitation that will continue in the coming days.
In the Arlberg ski resorts of Lech and Schröcken, there were already 1.24 and 1.32 meters of snow, respectively, on Tuesday.
“On the Schmittenhöhe and Loferer Alm, we will be able to measure over two meters of snow on Wednesday,” was already certain for Reiter on Tuesday, looking towards Salzburg. And even in Mariazell in Styria, on the border with Lower Austria, there was half a meter of snow on Tuesday.
For the meteorologist, it looks “like a very mild semester break week,” but there will be enough snow in the ski resorts. This also applies to the south, he said. There, it is true that there has not been a large supply more. “But there is widespread snow on the mountains,” said the weather expert – in the Karawanken about half a meter.
Whether it will be not only warm but also sunny next week, Reiter does not yet dare to forecast. Who wants to ski on the weekend, but should rather have Sunday in mind, he advises.
Flowers and pollen
Those who have nothing to do with snow will be happy on the flat. “There it becomes almost spring-like,” promises the meteorologist. Even the first flowers could sprout and also pollen load is already possible next week.
