In Austria, there were the first petrol stations with diesel and petrol prices above two euros per liter this week, according to the ÖAMTC.
On Monday, the first to be hit was a BP motorway petrol station at Brenner in Tyrol. Diesel cost 2.099, Eurosuper also 2.099, for the premium brand “Ultimate” both fuels cost 2.299 euros/liter. The VCÖ, however, noticed an increase in fuel tourism. And while Austria is hesitant about a price cap, Hungary has implemented it.
This has already been noticed by Burgenland motorists, who are increasingly drawn to Hungary. The price cap was introduced by the national-conservative government in November last year. This April, there will be parliamentary elections in Hungary.
According to the most recent comparison by the EU Commission (of 28 February), Hungarians paid 1.298 euros for petrol and diesel. In Germany and Italy, a liter of Eurosuper costs about 35 cents more than diesel, about 20 cents more in Austria. In Switzerland, the diesel price was 26 cents per liter higher. The price for Eurosuper is about 19 cents”, the VCÖ calculates. In addition to Hungary, the cost of petrol was also lower in Slovenia at the end of February.
In any case, there is no relief in sight because oil prices continue to rise. Brent crude cost 127.88 dollars per barrel (159 liters), 4.67 dollars more expensive than the previous day. In Germany, super petrol costs 2.008 euros per liter today and diesel 2.032 euros. In Austria, the daily figures come in the early afternoon.
A look back at the past year shows that prices have only gone in one direction: Upwards. In March 2021, diesel cost 1.159 and super 1.218 euros per liter. After a slow rise, the curve then went steeply upwards in September. There was a slight dip in prices in December and January, but it is going steeply upwards again.
