China has reported the highest number of infections since the first coronavirus outbreak in the central Chinese metropolis of Wuhan. As the state news agency Xinhua reported today, 402 local diseases with symptoms were detected nationwide yesterday – almost twice as many as the previous day. In addition, there were 435 asymptomatic infections and 277 cases imported from abroad.
After the first significant coronavirus wave in Wuhan more than two years ago, China quickly controlled the virus with strict measures. Since then, the second-largest economy has only experienced outbreaks limited to individual regions.
But since Omicron was first detected in Tianjin’s eastern Chinese port metropolis in early January, health experts fear that the more contagious CoV variant could push Chinese protective measures to their limits. With Beijing and Shanghai, individual cases have recently been discovered again in the country’s two most important cities.
