FFP2 mask remains compulsory at Vienna church services.
Wearing an FFP2 mask during church services remains compulsory in all Viennese churches. The Archdiocese of Vienna made this tightening compared to the Austria-wide regulations in the Catholic Church on Wednesday.
Due to the incidence of infections, the diocesan guidance recommends that all choir rehearsals and performances be required to show proof of 3G. Given the parish council elections on 20 March, it is determined that FFP2 masks are mandatory indoors for all persons (election commission, voters).
In Vienna, the FFP2 mask obligation applies to all church services
Apart from these selective tightenings, which are in line with the current provincial law provisions applicable to Vienna, the regulations adopted by the Bishops’ Conference with effect from 5 March remain unchanged. These include eliminating the minimum distance and the 3G rule for liturgical services. Outside the city of Vienna, an FFP2 mask is now only compulsory for services when entering and leaving the church. Otherwise, it is recommended. Therefore, the mask can be removed at the place. The FFP2 mask is also “strongly recommended” when going to communion.
Stricter rules in Vienna than in the rest of Austria
The framework regulations of the Bishops’ Conference allow the dioceses a regionally autonomous approach to the fight against Corona. This allows for both tightening and easing in line with state regulations. For this reason, the Archdiocese of Vienna has now tightened its rules for the area of the federal capital.
