The streaming provider wants to prevent several people from sharing a Netflix account.
It is forbidden, but sharing the Netflix password is standard practice. This allows several people and households to use the same Netflix account and thus save costs.
This puts Netflix under pressure: on the one hand, they want to keep investors happy by increasing user numbers; on the other hand, they don’t want to scare away users by taking strict action against password sharing.
An attempt to attract paying users
Now Netflix is again trying to stop account sharing, offering affected users an alternative way out to continue to use their Netflix account legally.
Instead of blocking shared accounts, the streaming provider wants to charge an extra fee for additional account co-users. In this way, Netflix is trying to attract new, paying users.
As Netflix informs, such a procedure is currently being tested in some countries. For example, the streaming provider in Costa Rica charges 2.99 US dollars for sharing an account.
At the same time, the company offers a new transfer profile feature. This allows all those who share an account to export their own Netflix profile to a new account. Their usage history, favorites, lists, and personal recommendations will not be lost.
