From 1 April, every Austrian will only get five free PCR tests and five free antigen tests per month. On Tuesday, the government announced a change in the previous testing strategy, which has been commented on by the provinces, partly disapprovingly, partly favorably. On Thursday, Salzburg and Styria agreed to the planned reduction of the Corona tests. Carinthia said it was now waiting for further details from the federal government. In Vienna, which had voiced massive criticism the day before, consultations on possible regional protective measures were on the agenda on Thursday.
On Thursday, the word from the provinces was that too few details were yet known. In addition to the ten free tests for everyone, people with symptoms should also have access to tests at any time. This is to be handled by the health authorities; the first point of contact is the 1450 hotline. Also, “people in susceptible settings and situations,“ for example, in old people’s and nursing homes, should be allowed to get tested more often, promised Health Minister Johannes Rauch on Tuesday.
Anyone who wants to voluntarily have a PCR test more than five times a month or purchase more than five antigen tests for self-testing will have to pay for them from April. The federal government does not want to set an upper-cost limit here. Unvaccinated contact persons will be able to be tested free of charge, regardless of whether they use the free tests or not – but only by order of the authorities, as the ministry emphasized on Thursday.
