The increasing daily numbers of Ukrainian refugees pose significant challenges for the domestic authorities. Above all, a traffic jam has formed in the registration process, as figures from the Ministry of the Interior show.

Since the beginning of the war, 164,000 people have entered Austria from Ukraine. More than 80 percent traveled, so about 30,000 will stay; 9,000 have been registered.

Registration is necessary in order to later obtain a displaced person’s identity card and thus have access to the labor market. Registration is not necessary for medical care, food and accommodation, the ministry emphasizes. Police registration is also not necessary for basic care, which provides pocket money of 215 euros for adults and 100 euros for children.

In practice, the refugees in the arrival centers (there are two in Vienna) – supported by aid organizations – apply for admission to basic care, get a place to sleep, clarify medical care, and any need for school places.

Forecasts predict 200,000 people will remain in Austria in the coming weeks. The Ministry of the Interior reported great willingness to help: hundreds of tons of donations, millions of euros in monetary contributions, and thousands of private quarters within a few days were a vital sign of cohesion.
